AUGUST 2025 - Last Vacation in Sun

August, the last month of summer, time is running out to enjoy vacationing in the sun.

My favorite place to vacation in the summer is Atlantic City. I enjoy the diversity of entertainment, excitement at the casinos … restaurants, shows, games, or quiet time walking on the boardwalk or enjoying the beach sand and waves.

Over the years, I have happy memories of visiting friends and interesting encounters with other vacationers.

Lorraine Besser, PhD in her book titled “The Art of the Interesting - What we are missing our pursuit of the Good Life and How to Cultivate It,  summaries her description of: “really good lives have it all – happiness, meaning and psychological richness – they are full of pleasure, fulfillment, and the interesting.”

Dr. Besser’s, definition of:” A psychological rich life – is composed of complex novel and challenging experiences that stimulate and engage the mind that evoke different emotions and that leave you with a different perspective than you started with.”  She then explains “Interesting” is the missing piece as it describes– a quality of our experiences and interesting experiences makes up psychologically rich life.”

She reviews the 5 Core Features of “Interesting”:

1.     The value attached to our experiences of psychological richness.

2.     The quality of our experiences.

3.     Arise from cognitive engagement.

4.     Catalyst to more interesting experiences.

5.     Experiences affect emotions.

Dr. Besser explains the power of an “interest mindset” and urges us to take the time to learn how to “find the interesting within our own minds a skill that can transform our lives.”  She mentions even during challenging times reframing our point of view, although it will not take away the hard reality, you may find insight or solution on how to cope with the situation.

I recommend “The Art of Interesting” as helpful source for reflective questions, quizzes, and worksheets created to uncover and cultivate an individuals’ unique interests in reviewing one’s life.
