WELCOME!
February, the month of Valentine’s Day!
The Valentine holiday traditions are infectious especially in NYC, the air filled with reminders of “love” when walking and viewing the stores with perfect gifts and restaurants advertising special romantic dinners.
While each holiday brings personal obligations, special gatherings, and rituals it is important that one’s communication skills can turn awkward moment into a cherished memory.
I am always searching for new techniques to enhance my communications skills to better understand how to help put at ease individuals I engage in my life.
In my search I discovered, Charles Duhigg book Super Communicators– How to Unlock the Secret Language of Connection to answer why we have trouble connecting with others in a conversation. He offers psychological research, sample stories, and a guide of practical techniques.
Mr. Duhigg explains “Supper Communicators” understand conversations have a flow and both parties have to be on the same mindset (Practical – Emotional or Social) and the goal is to create an environment of trust by sharing of themselves. He points out “… each type of conversation operates by its own logic and requires its own set of skills, and so to communicate well, we have to know how to detect which kind of conversation is occurring and understand how it functions”.
I agree with Mr. Duhigg who believes the “right conversation, at the right moment can change everything”.
Mr. Duhigg’s challenge question to answer is “…Who are we?” He asks us to consider and reflect in the context of … “our social identities make us and the world a richer place- rethinking recognize, accept and celebrate those differences in others”.
I took the challenge and reflected on “Who am I?” I discovered I am a woman who knows who she is and who believes strongly in my values, beliefs, and viewpoints on life. However, I am always exploring ways to better understand and reflect on how my social identities impact my life, especially in conversations with others.
ENJOY YOUR VALENTINES DAY conversations!
Looking forward to meeting you over a cup of coffee and conversation!
