July’s weather is perfect for my favorite pastime, clearing my schedule of events and deadlines to explore NYC.

I especially prefer letting curiosity take the lead as I walk in a neighborhood taking my time looking at the building architecture, changes in neighborhoods, stores, and connecting with new individuals.

I recently reflected on all my questions I ask daily; they stem from my need to know and understand.  Curiosity, I know as a human’s basic need for survival; but I believe humans can and are using their “curiosity” beyond basic survival.

I want to share Scott Shigeoka book titled Seek – How Curiosity can transform your life and change the world in which he discusses, the value of cultivating a curiosity mindset.

What is a curious mindset?  Scott defines a curiosity mindset is where “curiosity is at the forefront of your conscious mind, orient your thinking around seeking questions rather than answers, tap into you innate power of imagination to prepare you for encounters that rely on your ability to be curious”.

He explains central to curiosity mindset is the DIVE 4 elements and gives practical learning examples to build skill towards embracing your power of a “curiosity mindset”. The DIVE 4 elements are:

·      Detach – from certainty by letting go of assumptions and biases to allow room for deeper curiosity.

·      Intend - be mindful by preparing reflective questions and respective places.

·      Value – respect by seeing dignity in every person, including yourself.

·      Embrace- difficult challengers by seeing them as learning and growth in your life.

I always admired Maya Angelou-, a talented poet and activist, and was quoted as saying: “Mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive” - - 

Scott Shigeoka expanded on Maya Angelous’s quote by adding … “While shallow curiosity has helped us to stay alive, deep curiosity can push us to truly live.” 

I encourage you to explore this summer the “Curiosity Mindset” path as a way to enhance your life.
