FEBRUARY – Valentine Day & Loneliness

WELCOME BACK !

February is the month of Valentine’s Day!  A day Society sets aside to celebrate love and commitment.  A romantic day for couples who might be working towards a long-term commitment of “family”, the model for a fulfilling life.

During holidays there are articles, research statistics and stories written about “loneliness”. 

As a single woman, individuals have asked, especially when I was younger, “Are you dating?  Don’t you want to find a partner? Do you ever feel lonely?”  My response always, “I am happy with my single life”.  I believe, there is a common misconception about single individuals being the loneliest lifestyle.

In my search, I discovered, Bella DePaul, PhD book “Single at Heart – The Power, Freedom and Heart Filling Joy of Single Life” in which she summaries her investigative research, questionnaire statistics, and interviews in an effort to “revolutionize the way we think about being single”.

Bella, describes a “Single at Heart” person as choosing to be single, they thrive when single, they feel joyful, psychologically rich and authentic life.”  She touches on and discusses topics in all areas of a person’s life such as: Pressure from Society, Freedom, Solitude, Ones’ – Friends, Kids, Intimacy, Aging and Fear Dying alone.

Bella developed a questionnaire of 14 questions to help her understand- how Single People at Heart differ from people who are not. In 2022 participants completed and submitted her questionnaire, a total of 18,000 from more than one hundred countries.  She provides in her book for your reflection, this questionnaire of 14 questions, answers and scale to discover if you are “Single at Heart”.

Of course, I took my own advice, my questionnaire results are no surprise, I am truly “SINGLE AT HEART”. What are your questionnaire results?

Thanks to Bella, we have a new way of thinking about “Loneliness” as well offering ways to help others who have not learned to embrace the freedoms and lifestyle of “Single at Heart”.
